ABOUT THE GREENWAY

What is the Greenway?

Bridge over Yreka Creek

The Yreka Creek Greenway is a natural streamside area that will eventually span 4.5 miles along Yreka and Greenhorn Creeks. A major purpose of the greenway is to store and absorb floodwaters and maintain streamside habitat for native fish, native plants, native wildlife, and people who enjoy nature. As a unique part of Yreka's city park system, the greenway will gradually expand to provide recreation for families and tourists, including a streamside trail for walking and bicycling that will some day connect the entire city along Yreka and Greenhorn Creeks.

The Yreka Creek Greenway lies completely within the city limits of Yreka, California, and is comprised approximately 4-1/2 miles of Yreka Creek and Greenhorn Creek. Yreka Creek flows south to north and Greenhorn Creek flows west to east. The location of the project is the Yreka Creek Corridor from the Belle Avenue neighborhood park at the south limits to the City Corporation Yard at the North I-5 Interchange, approximately 4 miles. The spur of Greenhorn Creek from the dam to the confluence with Yreka Creek, approximately ½ mile, is also included.

Yreka Creek comprises about ten percent of the Shasta River basin and is the first significant tributary to the Shasta mainstem. A portion of the anadromous steelhead entering the Shasta system use Yreka Creek as spawning and juvenile rearing habitat. Four miles of Yreka Creek flows through the City of Yreka, which is the largest urban area in the Shasta River watershed and the county seat of Siskiyou County. As a result, the lower portion of Yreka Creek is a highly visible and public watershed in the Shasta Basin, having both local and regional importance.

Yreka Creek Greenway Committee

Workers and fall colors

The Yreka Creek Greenway Committee is a citizens organization that has been working to restore the Creek for over twelve years, with goals of enhanced fish habitats, educational and interpretive opportunities, and recreation utilization.

In 1989, and again in 2001, the Committee provided guidance and oversight for the creation of a cohesive plan for the development of a trail system that establishes links between neighborhoods and recreation opportunities, provides an alternative transportation mode, and supports remediation of the detrimental effects of industry and neglect in the Yreka Creek corridor.
